Why Jan 5 is special?
Umberto Eco, the Italian novelist & Semiotician
was born today, January 5, in 1932.
He is most popularly known for his novel,
"The Name of the Rose." Originally
written in Italian as Il nome della rosa,
is a historical murder mystery set in an Italian monastery in the year 1327. When asked about the
inspiration behind the novel, the writer had said, “I felt like poisoning a monk.”
Umberto Eco’s family name is supposedly an
acronym of ex caelis oblatus which is Latin for “a gift from the
heavens.” The name was bestowed on his grandfather.
His most recent novel is “The Prague
Cemetery.” Here’s a review by Telegraph, http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/bookreviews/8981215/The-Prague-Cemetery-by-Umberto-Eco-review.html
WHOSE WRITER IS HE: Readers interested in
Semiotics, biblical allusions and the most complex sort of wordplay, which
actually adds greatly to the structure of the storyline.
