Why Jan 5 is special?


Umberto Eco, the Italian novelist & Semiotician was born today, January 5, in 1932.

He is most popularly known for his novel, "The Name of the Rose." Originally written in Italian as Il nome della rosa, is a historical murder mystery set in an Italian monastery in the year 1327. When asked about the inspiration behind the novel, the writer had said, “I felt like poisoning a monk.

Umberto Eco’s family name is supposedly an acronym of ex caelis oblatus which is Latin for “a gift from the heavens.” The name was bestowed on his grandfather.
